More members of both the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Fire + Rescue NSW (FRNSW) would ensure current services could be maintained, but FRNSW brigades across the state are having great difficulty in attracting people to its service.
In recent times, both the Finley FRNSW and Berrigan RFS made the call for more members to ease the burden on current ones.
Finley FRNSW Captain Brian O’Hora said he didn’t receive one call in response to the drive to add more professional fire fighters to their team.
He described the result as “very disappointing”.
“We got absolutely nothing,” Capt O’Hora said.
“As for what the answer is, it’s beyond me.
“We’ve held open days and had very few people come through.
“And we’re not the only station struggling with encouraging people to come along.”
Capt O’Hora said anyone interested in joining the Fire + Resue NSW could call him, have a confidential discussion and a tour of the Finley facility.
RFS Federation Zone Group Captain Greyd’n Davis said while the Berrigan brigade has good numbers, recruitment was an ongoing process for the zone across all brigades.
“We have pretty good numbers at the moment - we’re not struggling, but we’re always looking for people who are community minded,” Capt Davis said.
"We’ve got room for people to support each other in a time of need.“
Capt Davis said being part of the RFS, or volunteering in any other way, ensures protection and support during fire, floods and other emergency events.
