Assistance from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program made the projects possible.
The LRCI Program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across the nation, supporting jobs and delivering benefits to local communities.
Federal Member for Farrer Sussan Ley said the idea behind the funding package was to ensure local government projects continued progressing, providing local employment and business activity.
“We’re seeing a great example of that here in Berrigan shire, and I am delighted the Australian Government has agreed to continue with the LRCI concept,” Ms Ley said.
Mayor Matthew Hannan said the LRCI Program has been a great program for local communities such as Berrigan Shire.
“Through LRCI, my council has been able to get on with delivering much needed community infrastructure with a minimum of red tape,” he said.
“It has allowed council to deliver projects across the shire that support active lifestyles and ways to enjoy our great outdoors as well as offering improved safety at some key locations.”

Barooga Recreation Reserve Netball Courts - construction of two outdoor netball courts with a concrete base and synthetic surface with suitable LED lighting. Associated realignment of internal roads and paths. Resurfacing of three outdoor tennis courts with a carpet surface.
Smithers Road Upgrade - re-sheeting and 3600m x 6m of road. Cr Hannan said this project will improve road safety for all users of Smithers Road, which has frequented heavy vehicle use.
Solar Light Poles and Burkinshaw Street Landscaping - initiated with the goal of implementing 18 solar-powered street lights. Cr Hannan said the newly installed lights are already adding to the safety of pedestrians and drivers while being affordable and sustainable. Berrigan Shire Council is aiming to stay ahead by installing solar light poles, which include CCTV and phone charging pads. These indicatives are stand alone units which can be scheduled on and off to preserve battery life. This project also included the installation of the Barooga Sporting Precinct retaining wall and landscaping.
