The group was involved in this week’s anniversary celebrations at the Blake Botanic Reserve.
Next week, it will host the ‘River Bites & Insights’ event at McLean Beach, Deniliquin on Wednesday, September 10.
Running from 11.30am to 1pm, members will share information on work taking place to monitor and boost cray numbers in the Edward River.
Crayfishing is currently not allowed in the Edward River, and some parts of the Murray River.
A sausage sizzle will be provided, and you can connect with local experts and community members.
RSVPs are required for catering purposes, to Janet Manzin on 0438 719 628.
The fishing season for cod and crayfish closed on Monday, September 1.
Recycling expansion
The 10c container deposit scheme is to be expanded to allow for a wider range of bottles and containers to be exchanged for cash in NSW and South Australia.
Each container deposit program will grow to include: Wine and spirits glass bottles; cordial and juice concentrate containers; and larger containers of up to 3L of beverages that are already in the scheme, like flavoured milk, fruit and vegetable juice.
Plain milk and health tonic containers will continue to be excluded from the schemes.
The expansion will see nearly half a billion additional beverage containers returned each year, saved from landfill and sent for recycling.
The expansion will not be immediate. The new containers are expected to be accepted by late 2027.
Until then, make sure you utilise your yellow lid bins effectively to reduce the number of recyclables going into landfill.
Classic screening
The Deniliquin Film Society’s next movie screening is a 1980s classic.
The Friday, September 12 screening will be The Breakfast Club, starring Emilio Estevez and Molly Ringwald - among a host of other ‘80s stars.
A brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal walk into Saturday detention and solidify their place in the 1980s zeitgeist in this acclaimed coming-of-age movie, recognised in 2016 by the National Film Registry as a film of cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance.
Doors to the Deniliquin Town Hall will open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
You can become a member by going to denifilms.tidyhq.com to beat the queue, or you can join on the night.
Ducks on Hardinge St
Residents and visitors to Deniliquin are asked to take extra caution when travelling through Deni, as our resident ducks have been more active of late.
They appear to be congregating near the Hardinge St and Whitelock St intersection in particular.
Perhaps it’s because of the wet weather, feed on the roads, or perhaps they’re just travelling between the lagoons more frequently.
Whatever the case, residents should keep Deniliquin feathery friends in mind when driving by.
Tree order deadline nears
Edward River Council’s annual Rural Tree Planting Scheme is closing soon.
If you’re a local landholder with a property of one hectare or more, you can order native seedlings at a subsidised cost of just $1.35 each.
Choose from more than 60 native varieties including red gum, wattle, bottle brush, melaleuca, and eucalyptus — perfect for improving biodiversity, supporting wildlife, and enhancing your land.

Aircon rebate
Keeping cool in summer is a non-negotiable in NSW.
However, running that old air conditioner of yours can cost a lot, especially in the long run over several months (not to mention years).
Luckily, the NSW Government now offers rebates to help you upgrade to a much better unit - and it’s better in so many ways!
The rebate gives you an upfront discount on a system that will last longer, run quieter, and cost you less per month.
So, you’ll pay less on the day of installation, and pay even less every month to run the device.
