Strathbogie Shire Council is entering the next stage of the project, following formal approval for the demolition and restoration.
Following a comprehensive consultation process and collaboration with Heritage Victoria, council secured formal approval for the project in February this year.
This approval recognises both the significant safety risks the bridge presents and the need to preserve and honour its heritage value.
In June, council engaged a specialist heritage consultant and a qualified structural engineer to oversee the technical planning and ensure strict compliance with heritage requirements.
The next stage involves developing detailed demolition staging plans and supporting documentation, including technical studies, site surveys and environmental assessments.
These documents will be submitted to Heritage Victoria for review and endorsement over the coming months.
Once the necessary approvals are in place, demolition works are expected to start in early 2026 and be finished by mid-year.
Council said a full project timeline would be shared once it’s been finalised with consultants.
Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Claire Ewart-Kennedy said the project was significant.
“While the decision to remove the bridge was not taken lightly, this project ensures that its heritage value is preserved through interpretation and conservation efforts,” Cr Ewart-Kennedy said.
“Council remains committed to delivering the best outcome for our community and will continue to advocate for the balance of funds needed to complete the demolition.”
The full scope of works includes the removal of the bridge, the clean-up of surrounding infrastructure, and rehabilitation of the riverbank.
There will also be a strong focus on honouring the bridge’s history, with archival photography and a heritage interpretation plan developed as part of the project.
