It opened in April this year, transforming one of the town’s historic buildings into a thriving new social hub.
The century‑old structure has lived many lives, originally a blacksmith’s shop around the turn of the 20th century, later a petrol station, car showroom, and more recently a mechanic’s workshop.
Today, thanks to Tocumwal Brewing Co founders Matt Shurgold and Nathan Haley, it has been lovingly restored into a warm, character‑filled taproom and beer garden.
It’s established a great gathering spot for locals, and is already succeeding in driving tourism to the region too.
Mr Shurgold said the move to Tocumwal was driven by friendship, as much as opportunity.
“The reason I came to Toc was for my good mate and business partner, Nathan Haley,” he said.
The pair spent years brewing together before deciding to take on the ambitious project of opening the town’s first craft brewery.
With limited funds, the renovation became a long-term labour of love.
“We’ve both put a lot of hard work into making this work,” Mr Shurgold said.
Their efforts have paid off, with the brewery quickly becoming a favourite stop for locals and visitors alike.
Since opening, Tocumwal Brewing Co has welcomed strong weekend crowds, supported by a rotating roster of visiting food trucks.
It’s also become a destination for community events, including a council run tourism forum.
But the pair believe their busiest days will be in the days and weeks ahead.
“This summer is still about getting us set,” Mr Shurgold said.
“We expect to be pretty busy.”
“We feel very fortunate with the way the community has welcomed us.
“Over winter, we thought things would slow down, but it seemed to just keep getting busier.
“We get locals from further afield as well, places, like Finley, Berrigan, Barooga, and larger towns like Shepparton.”
Awaiting the summer crowds is the Tocumwal Brewing Co’s new brews - four canned beers, which are great as gifts, souvenirs or the perfect takeaway beverage.
“If you haven’t already come down, make sure to come and take a look,” Mr Shurgold said.
