The Fifth Daughter Café received the What’s New Berrigan Shire – Main Street award in the Berrigan Shire Council 2023 Business Awards, while Tocumwal Aviation Museum and The Drome Café won the What’s New Berrigan Shire – General Business category.
They were two of six awards presented at a gala dinner at the Finley Returned Soldiers Club Tuesday evening last week.
Matthew Gorman from 2712 Fitness was named as Young Entrepreneur of The Year, while Eliza Baldwin from Baldwins Buses was awarded Young Business Manager of The Year.
A community vote decided the People’s Choice Award for Excellence in Customer Service, which was won by Berrigan Bakehouse.
Tocumwal Pharmacy was the runner-up.
Council said there were more than 15 nominations in this category, with a top 10 decided by the community.
This section attracted a record number of votes, with 2000 making their selection to decide the winners.
The final award was created to recognise council’s stronger focus on cross border collaboration, to ensure communities on both sides of the Murray work together cohesively.
It was opened up to any business within the communities involved in council’s cross-border memorandum of understanding with Federation Council, Indigo Shire Council and Moira Shire Council.
The winner of the Excellence in Cross-Border Collaboration award was Legacy Packing/AC Foods, with Yarrawonga Manufactured Housing the runner-up.
Berrigan Shire Mayor Matt Hannan said the awards night was a great success, and council was pleased to have Aussie legend Brian Nankervis as MC and providing entertainment.
“After a challenging few years for many businesses, our Business Awards was an opportunity for businesses to showcase how they thrived in the recent conditions, and young people in our shire leading businesses to success,” Cr Hannan said.
“Berrigan Shire businesses have had to become more resilient and innovative in how they approach the challenges out of their control.”
As part of the awards process, all finalists and winners have had a short promotional video made on their business.
These will be shared on council’s social media over coming weeks.
