Considering that it is the first year of football for most of the players, the Barooga side fought admirably.
But Shepparton ran away with the win, keeping Barooga scoreless while piling on six goals and 11 points to finish with 47.
Barooga’s football co-ordinator Darrell Bowden said that the girls were “up against an experienced United side”.
“The girls weren’t able to win, but were able to showcase their intensity, pressure and skills,” he said.
The loss sees the season finish up for the Barooga side, but sights are already set on the next.
“We will be trying to get a couple of sessions in before Christmas,” Bowden said.
“With nearly 30 players registered for the youth girl’s this year, and losing a couple to the women’s team, we will definitely be looking for numbers in both grades.”
A number of Barooga’s female footballers, coaches and volunteers were recognised for their efforts this season, and were nominated for MBCM Northern Country Women’s League awards.
Charlotte Artavilla-Bennett, Nakiyah Fraser Simmons, Taylor Simpson, Kiara Stephenson and Taylor Waldron were all nominated for the league’s Rising Star Award, showing Barooga’s strong development of first year players.
For the Volunteer of the Year Award, Barooga Football Club helpers Tash Chapman, Nick Jackson and Peter Wyatt were nominated.
Kate Chapman was also recognised for the fantastic job she has done in coaching and supporting both the women and youth teams, with a nomination for Coach of the Year.
The presentation was hosted on Monday evening. None of the Barooga nominees claimed an award.
