At last Wednesday’s Chinaman’s Island working bee, Deidre discovered a baby flying fox, sometimes called a fruit bat, apparently stranded in a tree.
The flying fox was being harassed by a couple of friarbirds whose nest was nearby and didn’t seem to coping too well.
Dutch Thunder, the animal rescue group, were called in and Kylie was able to get the flying fox down from the tree.
She was concerned that it was isolated from the group and could be lost or injured.
A quick check revealed that the flying fox was ok and Kylie took the lucky fruit bat back to Cobram for observation, feeding and recuperation.
If it responds, she will release it along with a number of others she has rescued.
There is always something interesting happening at the Working Bees at Chinaman’s Island Nature Reserve.
