• FOGO (green-lid bin): 30.12 tonnes of food and garden organics were kept out of landfill; contamination rate was just two per cent.
• Recycling (yellow-lid bin): 65.3 tonnes of recyclables like paper, cardboard, glass, aluminium foil and hard plastics (numbers 1, 2 and 5) were diverted from landfill.
• Garbage (red-lid bin): 39.04 tonnes was sent to landfill.
What caused FOGO contamination this month?
Council’s waste partner Wormtech did find a few incorrect items.
These included soft plastics which should go in your red-lid garbage bin. Council-supplied liners should be the only soft plastic material in your green lid bins.
Some hard plastics and glass were also found in the green bins, which should be in the yellow-lid recycling bin.
Masonry items were also found in the FOGO bins. These should go in your red-lid garbage bin.
Why using all three bins correctly at home matters:
• Reduces landfill use and extends the life of our landfill sites;
• Extends the life of materials - recycling and composting let items be reused or repurposed, instead of sitting in landfill for hundreds or even thousands of years;
• Avoids extra costs - contamination leads to added fees from our recycling and FOGO partners;
• Reduces the impact of waste on our community, future generations and the environment.
