Information centre relocated to historic site

A temporary home has been secured for the Tocumwal Visitor Information Centre.The centre must relocate while Tocumwal Foreshore works take place to build a new dining, retail and tourist information building.Tocumwal Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has secured the former Old Railway Store at the corner of Tuppal Rd and Bridge St.A move-in date is yet to be confirmed.Volunteers Gail Horan and Gayle Blakey said they hope to be operational in the new space by the time the tourism season ramps up again.‘‘The numbers coming through the region are starting to pick up, but it will take a while (because of COVID-19 restrictions),’’ Mrs Horan said.‘‘Usually this is our quiet period, but when it warms up again we should see our visitors increase.‘‘It’s exciting news and we’re looking forward to it.‘‘The chamber was really helpful with negotiating with the building’s owners, and it just has to be cleaned before we can move in.‘‘It will open lots of new possibilities for us, it will be a new adventure.’’The Old Railway Store building, much like the service that will soon be offered from inside it, offers an insight into the rich history of the town.It was built in 1908 to complement the Tocumwal’s railway, which was constructed three years prior by Victorian Railway.
