120 years of combined service

Two firefighters have been recognised for 60 years as members of the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Peter ‘Candles’ Carroll and Jim Sandal were each presented with the RFS Long Service Medal.

Mr Carroll was at home surrounded by family and friends when the presentation was made.

RFS operational officer Bortolazzo said it was a pleasure to be able to recognise Peter with the presentation of his medal for a combined service of more than 60 years, describing it as “a great achievement”.

“We are grateful of the time and commitment that Peter has given both to his local brigades, community and the RFS overall,” he siad.

The medal recognised his dedication to both his local community and brigades.

He started with his local brigade in 1960 and held the rank of Operational Fire Fighter from 1960 to 2020 before moving to an Operational Reserve role from 2020 to 2024.

He received his 60 year Long Service Medal with Clasps as a member of the RFS Southern Border Team.

Mr Sandral is a current member of the Coreen NSW RFS Southern Border Team and was also recognised for his years of service to the RFS and community of Coreen.

His RFS Long Service Medal was presented at the Corowa Hospital Nursing Home in front of his family, friends and other residents.

Mr Sandral started with the RFS in 1949 when he was 16 in the Coreen farming community, and held the rank of Operational Fire Fighter from 1949 to 2020.

He then moved to an operational support role from 2020 to 2024. He received his 60 year Long Service Medal with Clasps.
