With work starting this Friday, and costing $2.1 million, it is a collaborative effort between Transport for NSW and Berrigan Shire Council.
Transport for NSW regional director south Cassandra Ffrench said the improvements between Ulupna and Wollamai Sts represent the first phase of a $10 million reconstruction program planned for the highway between Tongs and Atkinson Sts.
“The work will include road resurfacing to deliver a smoother and safer highway and relocating the pedestrian crossing further away from the intersection of the Newell Highway with Pinnuck Street to improve safety,” Ms Ffrench said.
“In response to community feedback, the existing raised medians will be removed, and parking reinstated in its place.”
Transport’s work will involve resurfacing the travel lanes to make a smoother, safer road.
This will be carried out in a mixture of day and night shifts to limit impacts to the community.
Work is expected to take up to two weeks, weather permitting.
Berrigan Shire Council will then continue the project from early June, relocating the pedestrian crossing from near Pinnuck St to 50m further north along Murray St, to improve safety.
Motorists are advised to drive to conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic controllers.
Detours will be in place via McNamara and Hamilton Sts, and the Riverina Highway.
