Known for his evocative Australiana scenes, Raymond paints directly from life — whether among the blue-grey gum leaves or golden paddocks — preserving the colour, texture and atmosphere of the bush.
His passion has taken him around the world, with painting trips to Tuscany, the United States and Japan, but it’s the Australian landscape that continues to inspire him most.
“Anyone who has walked a bush track and had their senses tingled by the atmosphere of the sun rising in the morning or trekked the mountain ranges in the glow of the evening light will understand the path of the plein air painter,” Raymond said.
Raymond’s 2024 solo exhibition Don’t Fence Me In, held at Kyabram Town Hall, showcased his signature plein air works — painted on site, often completed over a day under consistent light and weather.
He said painting this way is both physically and mentally demanding.
“Every time you load the brush, there’s another decision to make — colour, tone, design — it’s constant,” he said.
Based at his gallery-studio in Kialla West, Raymond has found a new passion in teaching.
His Monday self-help group and Friday classes attract students from across the region.
“Enthusiasm runs off on other people,” Raymond said.
“After six to 10 lessons, they can walk out and paint what they see.”
Raymond continues to inspire a new generation of artists, not just through technique, but with a deep respect for the land.
“I love getting out in the bush and showing people what a beautiful country it is. Let’s look after it.”
