Based on the two centuries he has hit in varying styles in this Ashes series, it's hard to see the South Australian moving back to No.5 any time soon.
One month after kicking off Australia's Ashes campaign with a match-winning fourth innings century in Perth, Head was Australia's hero again on Friday.
When he walked out to open before lunch, Australia led by 85 in the first innings and would soon be one wicket down with Jake Weatherald's dismissal.
By the time he and Alex Carey walked off the ground at stumps, Head was 142 not out, with Australia 4-271 and leading by 356 runs, with Ashes retention in sight.
Head has long had interest in the opening role and has occupied it with success on previous tours of the subcontinent.
But he never wanted to vocalise that desire too loudly given it would mean taking someone else's spot.
When Usman Khawaja suffered back spasms in Perth, Head ran off the field declaring it was his time and the rest was history.
The left-hander now has scores of 123, 33, 22, 10 and 142no in the role.
Australia like Head and Jake Weatherald at the top given the way they can put the pressure back on England, with captain Pat Cummins indicating before Adelaide it's a call for this summer.
"It's hard because it's been a good start, but I also know that it's been bloody tough," Head said on Friday.
"And I've been pleased. I got lucky in Brisbane with getting dropped. But felt like I've put balls in and started really well.
"I've done it in different formats, felt like I could suit it.
"But at this stage, Test by Test, it seems to be working."
What will please Australia is the fact that while Head's runs in Perth came by going after the bowlers, he was more measured for the first half of Friday's ton in Adelaide.
In some ways, the hosts' hands have also been shown.
Australia first left Khawaja out of the team for Adelaide, even after he'd overcome the back spasms and been declared fit.
And it was then telling that when Steve Smith was ruled out of Adelaide with vertigo, Australia opted for Khawaja to return at No.4 rather than opener.
"I just felt like at stages, it sets our team up really, really well with a look," Head said.
"I feel like that energy gets Marnus (Labuschagne at No.3) going, I feel like Marnus has played well a couple of times this year when we've got together.
"I think it just sets up right at this stage. We've got Bangladesh and South Africa next year, things might look completely different.
"It might not be all the time, it may be all the time. I don't know, we'll wait and see."
