After the success of One Nation in the South Australian state election, leader Pauline Hanson was quoted as saying: “I’m going to go after Farrer.”
This could be interpreted as Farrer being the prize in a game – but we are not here to play a game. We are here to change the political representation for the betterment of our communities, not to be a political trophy.
This by-election in Farrer is about our people, our communities and our future.
At the top of our list of demands is productive affordable water, which is the basic requirement for productive, healthy communities. Everything should flow from there (pun intended).
And with One Nation now entrenched in South Australia, will this affect its position on water? The One Nation water policy states “all other forms of water recovery in the Basin should be exhausted before buybacks”.
So where will that leave NSW and Victoria, if Cory Bernardi is under pressure in his home state for even more of our water? I suspect that, yet again, we will be the sacrificial lambs in a political game.
Barnaby Joyce has talked about “clarity, unity and strength” and rebuilding from the ground up. Farrer does not need to be built ‘from the ground up’, but we do need a realistic and visible 20 year plan.
We certainly cannot afford another two years of political posturing, and being no better off when the next federal election is held.
Our 20 year plan needs to start now. Remember, the future is in our hands.
