New data reveals that August is the most dangerous month for transport-related drownings in Victoria.
Winter poses the risk of wet, stormy and flooded conditions where people can be washed away while driving.
Since 2000, 43 people have drowned in transit in Victoria.
Over a 10-year period from 2005 to 2015, 84 Australians drowned while attempting to drive through floodwater.
Life Saving Victoria research and health promotion general manager Bernadette Mathews encourages drivers to remain vigilant while driving.
She also encourages drivers to check conditions before leaving the house and tune into the local emergency broadcaster if necessary, as conditions can change quickly.
If you are near waterways and notice water levels rising, change route to higher ground as flash flooding may occur.
“It does not take much to make your car unstable, lose traction or wash away. A car can float in 15 centimetres of water … so never attempt to drive through flooded roads,” Dr Mathews said.
