Quaynor was the target of a homophobic slur from Adelaide's Izak Rankine in a game last August that resulted in a four-game ban for the star Crow, putting him out of the finals.
But the Collingwood defender was booed by sections of the Adelaide Oval crowd during the Magpies' 34-point win on Thursday night.
Quaynor and Collingwood coach Craig McRae were both confused by the booing while Adelaide chief executive Tim Silvers later said the "inappropriate" behaviour had "crossed the line".
Cumming was asked about the booing at a press conference on Monday.
"We're lucky enough to have the best fans in the league, and 50,000 there - they're all so passionate, they love this club," he said.
"But however, we do sort of encourage them to support us and footy respectively.
"Personally, if I'm at the footy, I'm not going to boo - that's just my personal opinion.
"But we do definitely just want our fans to be respectful."
Cumming didn't think the hype around the game or the booing had an impact on Adelaide losing.
"No, I don't think the booing took effect on the result. Obviously, there's been a lot of chat around it, so most of the chat's been around that," Cumming said.
"But like I said, we love how our supporters are passionate and we love what they give us.
"But yeah, we just sort of need to be a bit more respectful at times."
Cumming's message to Crows fans going forward was simple.
"Just support us how you normally do when we verse other teams - be loud, be respectful," he said.
"It's just personally I wouldn't do it (booing)."
AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon also condemned the booing and hoped a line had been drawn under the incident.
"Aussie Rules fans are the best fans in the world. But what we saw ... on Thursday night, the targeted booing, it's not what we expect of our fans," Dillon said.
"And we don't usually see it. And it was disappointing. And I think the clubs have both dealt with it in an appropriate way."
Asked what could be done to prevent it happening, Dillon said: "Look, I think this is one where it's led by the clubs and the players.
"And I think we've seen the response from Adelaide in particular and also Collingwood and also the players on both sides.
"And I wouldn't expect to see that again."
