Swansea fight back after Cameron Burgess misfortune

Burgess, who was in the perfect position to defend the swirling cross,  immediately put his hands on his head before apologising to  goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux and teammates.

It was the third bit of misfortune this season for the Socceroos defender who only last month conceded two own goals in a 4-1 Championship loss to Ipswich Town.

But the defender remains a key member of Tony Popovic's Socceroos squad, making 17 appearances for the national team. 

The Socceroos boss, however, will be a little concerned ahead of next year's World Cup with Burgess alco conceding an own goal against Japan in the Group C qualifying match at Saitama Stadium in October last year.

Not long ago, Burgess was the darling of Swansea fans when he scored the winner against Nottingham Forest - coached then by ex-Socceroos and Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou - in the 3-2 Carabao Cup thriller on September 17.

Burgess had an opportunity to atone for his earlier gaffe on Friday night but poked his effort over the bar in a crowded goalmouth.

Luckily for the 30-year-old, the Swans bounced back with goals from Zan Vipotnik (70th) and Adam Idah in time added on.

Idah was gifted the winner after goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo failed to gather a looping header, taking away attention from Burgess's error.

"It's a high-profile mistake but Arthur's been outstanding," said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson.

"He's been a colossus of a goalkeeper, and he'll get every bit of support because he's won us a lot of points over the last few years.

"When you make a mistake like that it's going to be highlighted, but he's a tough character and he'll get great support from his teammates."

Rival counterpart Vitor Matos, who has now overseen three successive home wins to lift Swansea to 17th and within two points of Wrexham, said it was an emotional game as expected.

"They started the game well, but the reaction after the goal was excellent. I think we got the reward for that."
