The pop star's representatives confirmed at the weekend that she has voluntarily entered a treatment facility five weeks after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Her ex-husband's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, told TMZ in a statement: "Kevin is aware of the reports that she has checked into rehab and that if she needs help, he is happy that she is getting help and that the decision appears to be one that she made and not one imposed upon her by others if it was.
"The key is that whatever the recommended treatment plan is that she follows it and completes it."
It's been reported that Spears and Federline's sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, played a "big part" in her deciding to get treatment.
An insider told People magazine: "Her sons were a big part of getting her to rehab. They've been clear with her. They just want her to be healthy."
Reports have suggested Spears - who is set to appear in court on May 4 - has been sober since her arrest and has been making positive changes.
After her arrest, the 48-year-old singer's team released a statement insisting she would be taking "the right steps" and embracing a "long-overdue change" as well as spending time with her two sons.
"Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time," the statement said.
"Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for wellbeing."
