Saints fall to reigning premier

Berrigan couldn’t come away with a win against last year’s premiers Deni Rovers in their A grade Picola & District League season opener on Saturday.

The Saints fought hard up until the second half of the third quarter matching Rovers goal for goal.

Some great passages of play, fantastic defensive pressure all game, but with hot conditions and some lack of fitness they went down.

Berrigan are planning to work on those deficiencies and plan to come out firing next week.

Final score, Deni Rovers 34 to Berrigan 24. Awards: Rorri Phibbs and Chloe Bogle.

An awesome team effort from B grade saw the Saints get a win in round one.

Final score Berrigan 46 to Deni Rovers 25. Awards: Maddie Loats and Rebecca Ware.

The C grade Saints kept up with the fast paced Rovers, applying defensive pressure all the way down the court and capitalizing on each turnover.

Entering the third quarter Saints were up by just two goals. A couple of major turnovers gave the Saints a comfortable lead going into the last.

Immense defensive pressure, hard work by the mid court and the shooters taking each opportunity to score allowed the Saints to walk away with the four points.

Final score, Berrigan 55 to Deni 34. Awards: Jodi Hawes and Paula Gowans.

C Reserve started strongly going goal for goal with defending champions Deni.

Beginning the third quarter only four goals behind, a few mistakes coming out of the center gave Deni the lead but the Saints held on.

Excellent defensive pressure and great shooting kept the Saints in the game but in the end went down.

Final score, Deni Rovers 26 to Berrigan 18. Awards: Sam Henderson and Rachael Arnold.

The Under 15s Saints started slowly with first game nerves taking hold in the first half.

The third quarter saw Berrigan play as a team, coming forward to find confidence in themselves and take control of the court.

Regan Fox dominated in defense with Abbi Litchfield playing a consistent game in the mid court.

Final score, Deni Rovers 33 to Berrigan 20. Awards: Regan Fox, Abbi Litchfield and Nikita Willemsen.

It was a good first game of the year despite a heavy loss for the U13s, with the Saints improving each quarter.

Final score, Deni Rovers 31 to Berrigan 4. Awards: Molly Rice, Layla Towler and Eloise Warenycia.

The U11s Saints played a fantastic game trying every position for their first match of the season. Awards: Rosie Phillips, Mia Cameron and Abi Ferguson.
