That’s how Shepparton Swans star Max Clohesy is tackling pre-season at The Hangar in the chase for his first Victorian Football League berth in three seasons.
The 21-year-old is trading Punt Road for Tullamarine after two stints and seven games with Richmond’s VFL outfit, making the move to Essendon to make his case for a recall to State League football.
A “good word” from mate and Seymour competitor Nic Quigg, who himself played seven games for Essendon in 2025, set the wheels in motion for Clohesy to link up with the Dons after helping the Swans to their first GVL finals campaign in a decade.
Despite the classy midfielder and former Murray Bushrangers’ highly touted skill set, opportunities were scarce at the Tigers in Clohesy’s return season after taking 2024 off from VFL duties.
But there’s no doubt in his mind – he’s ready to stake his claim yet again.
“Playing round one is the goal and hopefully (playing) a few more games,” Clohesy said.
“I’ve played at the level before, and I think I can play there again, so it’ll just be head down, bum up and get to work to hopefully play the vast majority of the season.
“(Feeling) pretty good actually; It’s a good change and I’m looking forward to it.
“The facilities are unreal; The Hangar is bloody huge.”
Clohesy joins fellow GVL alumni Nathan Wright and Boston Dowling – who has come across from Collingwood - at the Dons for 2026, while other regional footy exports have been hard at work finding their place in the State leagues.
Kyabram’s Archie Watt is bound for the West Australian Football League after winning the GVL premiership, while Shepparton United best-and-fairest winner Kade Chalcraft has opted to join Swan Districts.
Ex-Bear Harry Boyd has returned to SANFL club Norwood after his St Kilda axing, while Mooroopna’s Reeve Evans has earned a place in the Saints VFL squad.
