Arriving at Avenel Recreation Reserve with a point to prove, the Lakers were on from the opening minute, with their trademark slick ball movement immediately causing problems for the Swans.
Showcasing its powerful attack end and ruthless defence, Nagambie was hardly troubled throughout the four quarters, banking what was a vital win against an Avenel team just beginning to find its mojo.
The Lakers are now sitting outright second on the ladder with two matches remaining and coach Katie Sullivan said it was an excellent performance from her squad.
“What was really encouraging about the weekend was that even with a few key players out, we were still able to bounce back and have a very strong win over Avenel,” Sullivan said.
“The thing with Avenel is that it doesn’t really matter what position they are on the ladder, an Avenel v Nagambie game is always a fierce contest.
“So for us to be able to perform the way we did and get a win over our fierce rival, it was very pleasing.”
Sullivan explained the aspects of the game that her team improved following the loss to Shepparton East.
“Our full court defence was a massive focus for us after the Shepp East game and I thought we really stood up in that space on the weekend,” she said.
“The intensity across the court was really high and that allowed us to give our attackers plenty of opportunities to score.”
As for the star performers, she said veteran Alicia White led the way with a dominant display in defence.
“Alicia White always stands up in games like this and got our incentive for the game due to her leadership, reading of the game and crucial intercepts. And being her 50th game for the club, it was a nice way for her to bring up the milestone,” Sullivan said.
“We had Rebecca Comi come in after a full B-grade game and into our starting seven and played an excellent game in attack.
“And Maddison Biggs running through the midcourt had a standout game.”
