Former Socceroos coach Bert van Marwijk has been sacked by United Arab Emirates, the country's football federation said on Wednesday.
A 4-2 loss to Asian champions Qatar at the Gulf Cup on Tuesday, in a group game both sides needed to win to advance to the semi-finals, eliminated UAE from the keenly-contested regional tournament.
The 67-year-old was appointed UAE coach in March having previously qualified neighbouring Saudi Arabia for the finals of the 2018 World Cup - before he left the Gulf nation after contract issues and instead coached Australia at Russia 2018.
Van Marwijk, who led his native Netherlands to the final of the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, was tasked with qualifying UAE for the 2022 finals in Qatar but so far they have struggled.
UAE are fourth place in their group in the second phase of Asia's preliminary rounds, five points behind leaders Vietnam but with a game in hand.
The UAE's next World Cup qualifier will be on March 26, when they host Malaysia.
The UAE FA in a statement assured their football faithful that van Marwijk's successor would be appointed shortly.
