It’s been almost 140 years since the children of Savernake and district were provided with their own school.

But dwindling student numbers in recent years has forced the community to say goodbye to Savernake School.
When there were only three children enrolled at the school in 2021, the school was put in recess and the students encouraged to attend other district schools.
It is believed increased mobility and mothers earning off-farm incomes meant the loss of local students to larger schools.
And with enrolment projections indicating no improvement, re-opening is highly unlikely.
The Savernake Parents and Citizens Committee is planning a day to farewell the provision of education in Savernake, and to facilitate student and family reunions.
The celebrations will also honour the many achievements of the school, and will be held Saturday, October 15 from 10am to 3pm.
There will be formalities, displays and a barbecue lunch provided.
It was the growing number of farming families in the Savernake district that warranted the provision of education locally.
The school was constructed in 1884, and students started attending in 1885.
The number of students reached more than 50 in both the 1950s and the 1990s.
Since being established, the school has been a hub for more than just education.
It has connected local families for many school and community events.
With support of loyal and committed families, it has been one of the best-equipped schools in the region.
Parents have provided volunteer education, grounds beautification, sports areas and equipment, and much more.
Most importantly, the students from Savernake Public School have gone on to enjoy many varied livelihoods, in all sorts of industries.
Principals and teachers across the decades have ensured a solid foundation for higher education and training.

Anyone with duplicate photos, memorabilia and anecdotes would be most welcome to contribute them to be showcased on the day.
