The Fred Awards, run by the Fred Hollows Foundation, recognise everyday humanitarianism and people who care for others in “a decent, practical and no-nonsense” way.
Mr Morey called the nomination “a good acknowledgement” and a wonderful achievement.
“You work in the community not just for awards like that, but when they do come you’ve gotta be pleased,” he said.
“I’m very proud to be nominated for a national award, to be honest ... I appreciate people taking the time to nominate.”
Mr Morey has been involved in numerous efforts and organisations over the years, including being an instrumental part of the Cobram Community Cinema, CobCAB and the Youth Op Shop.
He was named Cobram Citizen of the Year earlier this year and won the Rotary Citizen of the Year in 2019.
However, he explained a standout moment for him was when through his efforts, a young person was able to completely change the course of their life.
A young person had been taking counselling via the Cobram Community House, which Mr Morey was involved in through the Youth Op Shop; Mr Morey said this person’s life “was in big trouble”.
“I got a call one night from the then-manager of the community house ... now that young person has gone on and is looking at higher education,” Mr Morey said.
“To know you’ve changed the life of one young person is the greatest feeling in my life. I’ll never know who it was, but to know you’ve made that impact on someone’s life, I can’t tell you how good that feels.
“It means more to me than anything. It’s more than saving a life, it’s changing a life.
“Just to know I’ve been part of changing someone’s life ... I still get a bit emotional about it because it was just such a special feeling.”
Fred Hollows Foundation founding director Gabi Hollows said the Fred Awards honoured those who may not get the recognition they deserve.
“Anyone can be a humanitarian; all it takes is small, everyday acts of kindness and compassion,” she said.
“Aussies continue to roll up their sleeves and help the less fortunate – the Fred Awards is the perfect opportunity to recognise these selfless individuals.”
Nominations for the Fred Awards and Humanity Awards, also given by the foundation, closed on July 22.
Winners for both awards are expected to be announced in late 2022.
