Local well known resident Mary Mansfield is one of those residents who saves all of her cans and bottles until there is enough to take to the return and earn where she then donates the money she gets back from her recycled goods.
“I donate the money I get back from the return and earn to the Guides, Scouts and Cubs,” Mrs Mansfield said.
“I like to rotate between the organisations so everyone gets a bit of money. Last year the groups received $350 each which was great.
“We don’t have many cans and bottles to donate during winter but in the warmer months there is more.
“Once the money I get back reaches $100 I then donate it to either of the groups.
“It’s been a rough two years for the groups so the money helps and goes into their activities, outings and crafts. “It is just a bit too, so we don’t have to ask for money from parents to do these activities.
“I’ve chosen to donate to those groups in particular as they are great groups to join for the youngsters.
“There are many local charities that residents can also donate the money they receive from their returns to which I encourage.”
Return and Earn continues to be a success, with more than 6.3 billion containers returned New South Wales wide for recycling through the scheme’s state-wide network since it commenced nearly four years ago.
Locally the Mulwala Laundry has contributed almost 15 million containers to the scheme since becoming a return point operator in June 2018.
Residents of the Federation Shire are also keen supporters having returned more than 45 million containers since the scheme commenced in December 2017.
