The Salvation Army’s annual appeal will start in earnest in Deniliquin today and continue through to May 29.
Deniliquin Salvation Army community engagement officer Sandra Whyborn said organisers hoped to raise $10,000 in Deniliquin and surrounding towns this year.
Already about $2000 towards that total has been raised in Mathoura, Finley and Jerilderie.
From today, volunteers will be shaking tins in public areas of Deniliquin.
There will not be any door knocking for donations this year due to COVID-19.
Ms Whyborn said all money raised through the appeal in the area would remain in the district and be used to help people locally.
She said the Salvation Army wanted to use the money in the community to help those who were struggling with poverty and those who were living rough.
“We’re so grateful to the Deniliquin community who have always rallied together and supported the Red Shield Appeal year-on-year,” Ms Whyborn said.
“This year is no different — we need the help of community members more than ever as we continue to support those who have felt the devastating impacts of the past couple years.
“We cannot do what we do without you.
“If you have the means, please consider donating to the Red Shield Appeal this year.
“Your generosity and support will help us to leave no-one in need within our community.”
Volunteers will be collecting donations on the corner of Cressy and Napier Sts on Friday, May 20, from 10am to 2pm; Saturday, May 21, from 10am-1pm; and Friday, May 27 from 10pm-2pm.
They will also be taking donations outside Deniliquin supermarkets on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29
They will also canvas Deniliquin businesses for donations on May 24 and 25.
Anyone who cannot donate in person on those days can drop donations into the Salvos Family Store in Cressy St during opening hours; post to Deniliquin Salvation Army, PO Box 75, Deniliquin; or donate online on the Salvation Army website at salvationarmy.org.au.
