This year includes a citizenship ceremony for four new Australian citizens as well as the presentations of the Berrigan Shire Australia Day Awards, including Citizen of the Year.
Cr Denis Glanville will again officiate the event with Mayor Matt Hannan conducting the citizenship ceremony and presenting the 2020 Australia Day Awards.
A special 30-minute showcase of The Man from Snowy River is an exciting addition to this year’s event, which includes Australiana entertainment of horses, Australian yarns and whip cracking presented by Stewart ‘Spud’ Bryant of Mansfield.
Cr Hannan said the Berrigan Shire always shows its passion for Australia culture on January 26.
‘‘Australia Day is an important day on our calendar that gives us the opportunity to celebrate our heritage and bring the community together,’’ he said.
‘‘This year we get to naturalise four new citizens into our shire which will be great to welcome them into our shire. We feel grateful they have chosen Berrigan Shire as their home in Australia.
‘‘Australia Day, again, is a day we get to celebrate our volunteers.
‘‘Particularly in the midst of these tragic bushfires it is recognised that the volunteering spirit is alive and as strong as it’s ever been and that is the most important aspect.’’
The Australia Day festivities in Tocumwal will be on the wharf area next to the old boat ramp.
Attendees are reminded to arrive early to get a good parking spot. The location of the Australia Day ceremony is decided through a two-year rotation, with celebrations to be hosted in Finley in 2021 and 2022.
