Berrigan Shire Council put its shortlisted projects to a public vote, with new lighting at Berrigan Sports Ground, Finley Recreation Reserve, Tocumwal Recreation Reserve and Barooga Recreation Reserve now to be submitted for NSW Government approval.
The lighting is expected to reduce electricity usage, and improve lighting at each venue.
With a portion of the funding specifically earmarked to engage youth in the community, strategic and social planning coordinator Jo Ruffin said the community selection fits well with the brief.
Mrs Ruffin said it prompted younger members of the community to participate in the vote as well.
‘‘We notice that a lot of the polling results that have come back indicate the public want to improve facilities and infrastructure,’’ she said.
‘‘It gives us a better idea on what the community wants.
‘‘The LED light replacement gives each town something, and in fact had a much higher rate of responses from ages under 35 than ever before.
‘‘It’s also the first time we’ve seen under 17 year-old voters, which gives us a good indication that it’s the people who will be utilising the facilities that are willing to cast their votes.’’
Other projects submitted by the council are:
?Hayes Park, Berrigan – to establish interpretative signage celebrating Berrigan’s historic milestones, toilets upgrade, new shelter, and upgrades path access to the Berrigan Skate Park. ?Apex Park, Berrigan – relocation of play equipment, shelter and park furniture upgrades, improved disability access and fencing. ?Barooga Adventure Park final stage – upgrade existing amenities, improve parking and the integration of the park with the Barooga library.
Mrs Ruffin stressed that all projects needs to be approved by the NSW Government before funding is officially committed.
