YMGCR Bowls
Well the old game of bowls can have you on the ultimate high one week and down the next, but that’s sport and so it was the mighty Midweek A1's that went down in the A1's Grand Final to a fantastic side in Wangaratta losing 49/55.

YMGCR got off to a slow start and at no time ever hit the front. The only bright spot for the day was the rink of Stuart McNeill, Les Spencer, Robyn Moore and her side kick Gary "Batman" Presnell who won 17/14.
Batman was a man on a mission as he drew shot after shot to set the rink up and then Robyn got into the act with her own telling bowls and then big Les would do what he does best and draw shots. Skip McNeill then played some fantastic skip shots when needed, they won the first six ends and were looking rock solid...BUT the only trouble, they were only getting singles and it was only a matter of time that in one end Wangaratta half their lead 6/3.
Winning the next three ends but again could get singles they jumped out to a 9/3 lead. Finally on the twelfth end they picked up a three to lead 12/4.
Suddenly the Wang skip started to get into the game and the team lifted to pull the lead back and after seventeen ends YMGCR led 13/12.
McNeill's rink then got the supremacy back and after nineteen ends, got out to 17/12 lead. Last end for the rink saw Batman and Robyn all over the jack and were holding five shots when the Wangaratta skip played the championship bowl to draw the shot (he only had inches for shot, for the young generation it was about 60 mm).
Stewie tried in vain to remove their only bowl in the head but wasn't able to, if he could've, the game was up for grabs.
The game between Garry Sanders and Wangaratta's top skip in Ian Brimblecomb started out well for YMGCR when Sanders led 5/2 after four ends. Wangaratta picked up a four and the game settled into a holding pattern (on the seventh end YMGCR were holding six shots only for Wangaratta skip to draw the shot...that hurt). Both sides only conceded single shots and after ten ends the scores were 10/10 all.
Wangaratta then gained the upper hand and jumped out to lead 10/17 after fifteen ends, but with Sanders front end of Clarie Sanders and Susie Middleton still putting bowls in the head and with third Greg "GG" Green playing good solid bowls and Garry putting the opposition skip under the pump, it was only a matter of time before they would cash in and they picked up a five and then followed it up with two more singles to tie the game 17/17 with only three ends to go.
In the last game poor Anne Miles rink of Snodger Lowrie, Laureen Smith and lead Rhonda Irvine got off to the worst possible start dropping nine shots in the first three ends, to their credit they never dropped their heads to make a mini fight back and when they were getting back in the game Wangaratta then won the next five ends to lead 3/16 after ten ends.
But the troops dug in deep and fought back to win three of the next four to trail 12/17 after fifteen ends but Wangaratta then settled to win the next four ends with only single shots.
That was enough to put them over the line and they won 14/21. That just shows how important a good start is because YMGCR outscored Wangaratta over the last eighteen ends.
Well it's the end of an era, Lorraine Stone has decided to retire from Midweek Selectors after a successful ten years at the helm. Thanks for all your tireless and thankless work (your back will eventually heal after all the back stabbing it has taken...JOKE)
Also thanks to Marie Whitehead and Ray Irvine for putting teams and scores into the O&M and YMGCR website.
Overall the club had a oustanding Pennant season with a premiership and a runners up and two other teams playing finals with most of the other teams being competitive.
What a fantastic effort the little town of Yarrawonga had in winning three of the eight Weekend Pennant Sections and a Midweek title to go with it, well done ClubMulwala.
Wednesday Social Bowls had 24 players and YMGCR had only one 2 game winner, that was a visitor Bruce Irvine and new bowler who has really improved over the pennant season in Denise Tribiano winning with +28.
Runners up with a win and a draw were Les Wilson and Dougie McTeir with +10. Jackpot failed to go off. Lucky number winners were Shad Klodinski and Don Tipping.
Friday Social Bowls had 40 players and the winners were Bill Hidson and Sue Evans. R/U were Danny McNeill and Mick Dickson and 3rd went to Allan Goudge and Neil Loveridge.
Please note Friday Social is now back full time and will be played on Good Friday.
The club have decided to gather all photos and videos from the A1's Grand Final win, if anyone who would like to send them to Claire Sanders (she is one of the only members who has the capabilities to pull this off), that would be great and if any member would like a copy, give her a stick and she will gladly put them on.
The AGM has been pushed back to May 29, the committee will let you know further details later on. So if you would like to contribute to the running of the club in any capacity, being a position on any of the committees being the selection panels or main, please the more candidates the club have the better.
ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls
Tuesday, March 29 – Division B1 Midweek Pennant Grand Final
Division B1 – ClubMulwala 78 (14) defeated Moyhu 42 (0)
The ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls Division B1 side has had a dominant year for the 2021/2022 O&M region bowling season. Finishing top of the ladder at the end of the home and away games winning 12 of their 14 matches with only two losses; feeling reasonably confident in their ability however always respecting their opponents and never underestimating them is this sides key to success.
This, along with playing as a team and always encouraging each other propelled them directly into the Premiership Final from the qualifying final just a couple of weeks ago.
The mood on the bus travelling to the venue at Corowa Civic was restrained with a little bit of light hearted banter but mostly quiet with the bowlers thoughts of the coming battle foremost in their minds.
Time to play and the side was supported by a good number of vocal fellow club members who had travelled the 45 minutes to encourage their B1 side to victory.
Their opponents from Moyhu started out very well and quickly had two of their three rinks well in front early however Sam Smith and his team were bowling extremely well and took an early lead which kept the side in the game.
This encouraged the other two rinks and Cliff Morton and Barry Pitt and their teams fought back and with improved bowling all round managed to record very good wins.
Moyhu tried hard all day and there were some very impressive contests throughout however in the end they were no match for the local side who recorded a 36 shot victory.
Great teamwork – great support for each other – great win – 2021-2022 division b1 premiers.
Congratulations to Moyhu for making the Grand Final from 4th position at the end of the home and away matches which in itself is no minor achievement. Thank you to the Corowa Civic Bowling Club for the preparation of their greens which played beautifully and also for the professional manner in which they conducted the Grand Finals and looked after the participating sides.
Lastly thank you to the O&M for their professionalism in running the competition in another trying year.
Results as follows:
Barry Pitt, Jan Morton, Anita Albert and Wade McPherson 27 defeated Stuart Brain, Julie White, David Waring and Murray White 15.
Sam Smith, Loris Lochhead, Betty Richmond and Graham Albert 30 defeated Neil Magee, Angela Delaney, Joe Northey and Sue Dinning 11.
Cliff Morton, Malcolm Miller, Faye Cook and Judy Laughlin 21 defeated Charlie Thompson, Max Baker, Christine Magee and Lynette Northey 16.
Three Grand Finals for the smallest club in the area. What a great effort.

Sunday, April 3 – Club Mixed Pairs Championship – Final
This final started out as a bit of a tug of war between two very competitive teams. The Richmond’s have been bowling beautifully throughout the Pennant season and continued their good for in rounds 1 and 2 of this competition.
Peter Humphreys is a very competitive bowler and usually very good in these club competitions and Bev on her day can be very hard to beat. She had played beautifully in rounds 1 and 2.
As already stated the game started out very competitive and it was neck and neck early and Peter and Bev drew away late in the middle of the game and by the 13th end had a 13 – 7 lead. But it was not over yet.
Four shots were scored by Daryl and Betty on the 14th end making it 11 – 13 going into the last end. The quality of the bowls from both teams was excellent and the small crowd that were in attendance were enthralled.
At the end of the 15th end scores were level at 13 apiece and the two skippers tossed for the mat in the decider. Peter won and went for a long end; a good decision because they had been doing very well at this length.
All bowls had been delivered except the skippers last one each and Daryl and Betty were holding a single shot. Peter put his last bowl down and it was a beauty; taking out the shot bowl of the opposition and staying in the head making 3 shots.
Daryl had a bowl to go however it was a difficult shot and he went just wide of the head. A great game to watch and worthy Champions.
Results: Peter Humphreys and Bev Norwood 16 defeated Daryl and Betty Richmond 13
Farewell to Graham and Anita Albert
Two of the clubs most popular members are moving to the Mornington Peninsula to be near their families. Graham and Anita Albert are the type of members that every club wants and needs. They are engaged in all club activities, are there when something needs to be done and are both very good bowlers as well.
They leave after a very successful Pennant season with both winning two premierships and both gaining ‘eight’ badges during the year.
They have wonderful families and the club wish them all the success in their new adventure.
We know that we will see them again as they have so many great friends from the club and they have promised to visit again.
Cancellation
Unfortunately the club have had to cancel the REMEMBER OUR HEROES ANZAC DAY BOWLS TOURNAMENT.
This decision was not made lightly as this tournament is the premier tournament on the calendar each year.
That wraps up the report for this week. Keep an eye on the greens noticeboard for further activities in the future. Stay safe in everything you do.
