Sutton takes top job at Tocumwal

By Southern Riverina News

Dennis Sutton will serve as the Tocumwal Football and Netball Club president for the 2019 Picola & District League season.

Although not official until the next committee meeting, it was announced Sutton would take over from outgoing president Malcolm Hart on Saturday.

It was previously announced Sutton would be seniors co-coach with David Bate, with a decision yet to be made if the club will elect a new co-coach or if Bate will coach solo.

Sutton said he’ll be keeping with the new philosophy of focusing on the future of the club with the main aim to build on the club culture.

‘‘We want the juniors to stay at their local club as they develop rather than leaving for other clubs,’’ he said.

‘‘I want to bring the club in a direction where we can be passionate about the history and future of the junior players coming through.

‘‘All players should feel Toc. is a good place and has strong leadership.’’

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the Bloods, signing three more new recruits — Tim Arklay, Glenn Braybon and Matthew Osborn.

Utility Arklay played with Bannockburn in the Geelong & District Football Club after moving to Tocumwal to work.

Osborn and Braybon are both former Finley players with Braybon even captaining the senior side at one stage, while Osborn played with the Cats in a thirds premiership.

The trio join fellow signees Alex Saraikin, Robbie Hermann and Dion Metzner on Tocumwal’s senior playing list.

Sutton said much of the signings have come from the behind the scenes work of Bate.

‘‘David has been the mastermind talking to players,’’ he said.

‘‘Many of them are locals or have moved to Tocumwal and we’re getting them back into football.

‘‘It’s extremely pleasing to see us not only focus on our juniors but also identify these new signings are just what the club needs at this time.’’

Sutton said more signings are expected in the future, as Bate is close to getting more pen to paper.

Tocumwal Football Club will be hosting a meet and greet with the coach and president at the clubrooms on Friday, December 14.
