The industrial business street will receive $484,000 in federal funding plus $450,000 from the Berrigan Shire, topped up with contributions from Jersey St business owners.
The upgrades to the street will include power, kerb and guttering, sewerage, roadworks, levee works and footpaths.
A significant amount of the money will go towards the power upgrades.
Jersey St business owner and Tocumwal Chamber of Commerce president Sergio Redegalli said the improvements are desperately needed.
‘‘The lack of power can prevent businesses from growing and some people across the road from me don’t have sewerage.
‘‘We all came together and asked if council could do something about it and to their credit they’ve listened to us.
‘‘They’re planning new sewerage and kerbs on the west side of the street, as well as footpaths.
‘‘There will be a total upgrade of power with all businesses receiving a minimum of 100 amps and I have received an allocation of 300.’’
Mr Redegalli said the upgrades will bring professionalism to the street and also provide a chance to contribute to tourism.
‘‘One business owner has a collection of tractors which he could use to form a museum and that’s another attraction for them.
‘‘If there’s a builder from Sydney who wants to use our services we now won’t look like we can’t handle basic tasks because of something simple like the lack of power.
‘‘I moved from Sydney to Tocumwal to start my business and thought it would be easy, but without the services in these small rural towns people aren’t going to make the lifestyle change.
‘‘Furthermore this develops the west side village and can attract more business to the street,’’ Mr Redegalli.
Member for Farrer Sussan Ley said local contractors and suppliers will be used for the work, creating 19 extra jobs during construction and an estimated 17 new direct jobs on completion.
