NAIDOC Week is a nationwide celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Celebrations were held across the country, including the Mitchell Shire, Campaspe Shire and Greater Bendigo last week, July 7-14.
Heathcote and surrounding townships are located on Taungurung country.
The Seymour Local Aboriginal Network partnered with the Taungurung Land and Water Council, Mitchell Shire, and the Department of Defence (Puckapunyal) last Wednesday to celebrate this year’s theme of Voice, Treaty, Truth. It was an acknowledgement that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy.
A traditional smoking ceremony, speeches, parade and exhibition at Kings Park provided the community with a platform to get involved and learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
