To improve this percentage, schools across the district participated in the ‘Big Vegie Crunch’ campaign at the end of term one.
Participating schools included Tocumwal, Jerilderie and Blighty public schools, where activities were designed to help children develop a positive attitude towards vegetables.
The Big Vegie Crunch attempted to break the record for the highest number of children eating vegetables simultaneously.
At Toc Public, 136 students participated and came to school dressed in the colour of their favourite fruit or vegetable.
In the lead up to the event, from March 25 to 29, the students took part in a ‘Vegie Adventure’.
Every day of that week, children were encouraged to bring different colours of fruit and vegetables to school to eat.
Principal Darren White said he was excited to see so many children participate enthusiastically in both the Vegie Adventure and the Big Vegie Crunch.
‘‘We hope the students will see vegetables, in particular, as something they choose to eat.
‘‘The SRC, under the guidance of Mrs Gillespie, showed great leadership organising all the activities,’’ he said.
