It was one of the tightest finishes in Berrigan Cup history saw the top three placings all finishing within a length of each other.
Berrigan trainer Shilleagh saw Marchello, ridden by jockey Bradley Vale cross through the line first just 0.6 of a length in front of one of Phil's top horses, Beaujeen, ridden by Tyler Schiller.
Berrigan local and one of the owners of Marchello, Ken Moar was happy with his horse taking out the Gold cup, defying the odds given from the previous trainers.
“We had everyone from town backing him to win but the bookies so I could imagine they'd be pretty disappointed in themselves after that one,” he said.
“It was good to see the crowd cheering him as he came through the finishing.
“It's extra special for Marchello as he was ruled out from the previous trainers who recommended retiring him from racing.
“We saw how healthy he was at the start of the year and thought we'd give him another go so that lead us to our local husband and wife team, Bradley Vale who was the jockey, and Shilleagh Meyervale, his trainer.”
Mr Moar is also a Berrigan & Dristrict Race Club committee member, tasked with the maintenance of the track.
“I'm glad it turned out to be a good track, we got very luck with the weather,” he said.
“Earlier in the week they were predicting 30 to 40mm throughout the week so I held off on watering but when that dissipated I had to make the adjustments.
“We had no complaints on the day so we're happy the track held up.”
