Edward River Council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony will be held in the Deniliquin Waring Gardens on Sunday, January 26 from 9am.
The celebrations will begin with the Deniliquin Rotary Club’s annual community breakfast from 7.30am, which is free.
Mayor Norm Brennan said it is great to see so many people in the community being considered for awards, confirming ‘‘a large number of nominations’’ were received.
‘‘On Australia Day, we come together as a nation to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian,’’ he said.
‘‘It is a day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It is also a day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.’’
This year’s theme is ‘Australia Day – Everyone, every story’, and Cr Brennan said he wants to show the world how we celebrate our nation’s favourite day. The Deniliquin ceremony will also include an address by council’s 2020 Australia Day Ambassador Brenda Norman.
Miss Norman is a Deniliquin High School teacher and has swam the English Channel and Catalina Channel to promote the importance of mental health in rural areas.
Through her endeavour, she established the youth mental health charity Channel 4 Change.
