Pool farewells popular volunteer

The Berrigan War Memorial Pool won’t be the same next swimming season after popular volunteer Doris Fowler recently moved to Melbourne.

Doris spent 28 years on the Pool Committee including time as treasurer and secretary.

War Memorial Pool Committee president Sue Chisholm said the long-time volunteer will be missed by patrons and committee members.

‘‘We want to thank Doris for everything she has done for us over the years.

‘‘She didn’t just spend her time doing secretary duties, she was an incredibly hard worker.

‘‘Over the years she would be running the canteen all afternoon and she used to vacuum the entire pool without any help to start the season off.

‘‘Doris always supported any idea we had with making the pool more attractive.’’

The Berrigan War Memorial Pool is the only subsidy entry pool in the Berrigan Shire.

The facility relies on donations to survive and is fully operated by volunteers such as Doris.

Ms Chisholm said Doris’s passion for ensuring the survival of the pool came from her children.

‘‘Doris wanted kids to have the opportunity to swim throughout the summer.

‘‘Her daughter and son loved using the pool and when they moved away from town she wanted other kids to have the same opportunity her children enjoyed.’’

Doris also volunteered for the Berrigan A&H Show Society, Berrigan Amateur Dramatic Society and Berrigan Red Cross.

Her position as Pool Committee secretary was recently filled by Carla and Christina von Brockhusen.
