It was a sloppy and slushy morning on Saturday at the Finley Showgrounds, where the challenging Finley Mud Run was held.

Hosted by the Finley High School Timor Leste Immersion Program students, the fun event was a way of ‘‘getting dirty’’ while raising money for the people of Timor.

For the 200 people who took on the five kilometre obstacle course, there was plenty of running, climbing and crawling through mud and hay.

Immersion Program co-ordinator Yasmin McGrath said the Mud Run couldn’t have gone any better.

‘‘We were so rapt with the turnout and blessed with good weather.

‘‘Everybody loved it — we used plenty of hay bales, people needed to jump through skip bins and an old milk vat filled with powdered milk.

‘‘It was about having a good time and it was great to see people coming from as far as Yarrawonga.’’

The Mud Run marked the end of the fundraising campaign for the Immersion Program students.

For the past two years, the students have being fundraising to help pay for expenses when they travel to Timor in April and to help provide school and medical supplies to local villages during their stay.

To date the students have raised over $25,000 from various events, such as an annual wood chop drive, garage sales and raffles.

Ms McGrath said the students’ efforts have been inspiring.

‘‘The money will go a long way to helping people in need.

‘‘The students have done so much and the Mud Run was another example of their efforts.

‘‘They worked so hard setting up and even did the Mud Run the night before to make sure it was safe and not too difficult.’’

The students, staff and helpers would like to thank the following organisations and businesses for their support of the event: Finley Apex, Finley Pony Club, Finley Showground Committee, Finley Touch Football, Finley Community Gym, Eagle-i, Boomerang Motors, Taylor and Whitty, Finley Party Hire, Field Air and Finley RFS.
