There were plenty of celebrations at the Finley Golf Club on Sunday after its pennant team returned home victorious from the 2017/18 Mid Murray season grand final playoff.
Finley defeated old rival Deniliquin 3/2 in the fourball pennant decider played at Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club.
The Mid Murray Fourball Pennant is contested each year by Corowa, Yarrawonga, Cobram, Tocumwal, Finley and Deniliquin.
This was the third win in four seasons for Finley after claiming the 2014/15 and 2015/16 grand finals and finishing runner-up in 2016/17.
The winning Finley team consisted of five pairs — Trevor McCaw and Barry Wilson, Colin McNamara and Wayne Peasley, Grant Wilson and Simon Fuller, Matthew Daniel and Rodger Sutton, and Ian Armer and Dale Pyke.
Former pennant captain Barry Wilson said the win came down to the last hole.
‘‘Trevor McCaw and myself were the last pair playing and our match was tied and the teams were squared at two each.
‘‘We needed to compete in a playoff hole to win.
‘‘I was lucky enough to par and Trevor bogeyed but the two Deniliquin players both bogeyed, giving us the win.
‘‘It’s always a grudge match against Deni, and beating our biggest rivals was special.
‘‘As it was a handicap event it boils down to who was the best on the day,’’ Wilson said.
This year saw Ian Armer take over the team captaincy after Wilson retired from the position.
Wilson said Armer has been a great leader for the club.
‘‘Ian has been a great captain, bringing through younger players and that has helped us win.
‘‘The team played well together (on Sunday) and there was a fair bit of excitement, particularly at the end.’’
