It was another strong turnout for the Berrigan Shire Australia Day Ceremony on Friday.
The tranquil beauty of Bullanginya Lagoon was the backdrop as attendees huddled into the marquees erected outside the Barooga Community Hall.
Before the ceremony they feasted on a hearty breakfast cooked by the Barooga Australia Day Committee.
Finley locals John Hand and Jorja Daniel were named Berrigan Shire Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year respectively.
Mayor Matt Hannan said the ceremony was an important way to celebrate the community and its volunteers.
‘‘This day helps us celebrate what is good in our shire from the community, friendship and diversity.
‘‘Our community can’t operate without volunteers.’’
Last year’s Citizen of the Year Barry Wilson and Young Citizen of the Year Victoria Kennedy were guest speakers, with Mr Wilson encouraging youth to become volunteers and join local community groups ‘‘to gain life experience out of volunteering’’.
Former Barooga resident Andrew Twigg was the special guest speaker and humorously reminisced about his time in Barooga, as well as sharing stories on his military life and his work with Snowy Hydro.
