Ros claims top award

November 22, 2017

Saturday’s Finley Rose Show was a delight for the senses, with guests wowed by colour and sweet aromas coming from the Bob Close Pavilion.

The Finley Show Society event attracted more than 100 rose entries, which show society secretary Carol Kennedy said was a pleasant surprise.

‘‘We were very pleased to see so many entries after all the rain on Thursday,’’ she said.

‘‘It was also good to see the support from locals, as this is only the second year the show society has hosted the rose show.’’

While entries were being judged by Irene Whelan and Barbara Fox from Berrigan, exhibitors and other guests enjoyed a flower arranging demonstration by Anne Hawkins.

The rose show was the last event hosted by the Show Society for the year, after the poultry auction in March, dog trials in June and the 100th annual Finley Show in September.

Mrs Kennedy said it was ‘‘the perfect way’’ to conclude what has been an historic year for Finley.

‘‘It has been a wonderful year for the town and the show society,’’ she said.

‘‘On behalf of the society, I would like to thank the community, volunteers and sponsors for their support.’’

The rose show raffle was well supported on Saturday, and the day’s most successful exhibitor Ros Hansen took home the first prize, a rose bush.

The sprinkler and garden hands went to Valma Smith, and the bag of potting mix to Alexander Macartney.

The Show Society will meet tonight for its AGM.
