Winners were not just found at Flemington Racecourse on Melbourne Cup Day, with some great prizes won at the Finley RS Club as part of the gala day.

The main function room was filled with colour and bubbly for the 32 ladies who dressed in their best spring fashion for an afternoon of lunch and Melbourne Cup celebrations.

Event organiser Sharen Parmley said despite low numbers it was still a great day for those who attended.

‘‘It was lovely to see the ladies and a few men go to the effort to dress up in their best spring colours,’’ she said.

Much like at the track, the club’s celebrations about were more than horse racing.

A small Fashions of the Field competition was held, with Lady of the Day going to Margaret Singleton who stood out in her pale blue dress.

Leslie Wilson won best fascinator.

Previously hosted by the Country Women’s Association, this year’s Melbourne Cup Day was coordinated by the RS Club with support from Finley Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture.

Although not everyone backed Rekindling, many did walk away as winners in the sweeps.

Live entertainment was provided by Fake News band members Craig Hendy and Justin Crowley, who also helped the judges with Fashions on the Field.

Luncheon sponsor Sue Hill said it was an ‘‘excellent’’ day with an enthusiastic crowd and thanked the RS Club.

A portion of the proceeds of the day’s raffle will be donated to the Finley Netball Club.
