Scam transaction thwarted

A caller police traced to Thailand allegedly tried to scam a Finley woman out of $5000 last week.

The 79 year-old woman received a call from someone claiming to be from Telstra, who convinced her to go to the bank and transfer $5000 to another bank account.

Bank staff alerted the woman it was most likely a scam.

Police said the caller phoned the woman’s mobile phone again while she was in the bank, and he reportedly became aggressive when she put the caller on to bank staff.

Police praised staff at the Finley bank, who they said prevented the woman from losing any money.

They are now calling on other regional banks and retailers to also be vigilant of customers wishing to withdraw large sums of money or wanting to complete ‘‘odd’’ transactions.

Anyone who suspects a call to be a scam is asked to contact police.
