Toc’s CBD life saver

Tocumwal residents now have better access to a defibrillator.

Donated by Tocumwal Lions, the life-saving machine has been installed in Tocumwal’s IGA supermarket.

Lions president Glennis Pohlner says IGA is a central location in the town.

‘‘The golf club and football club has a defibrillator but they are not in the middle of town like the IGA.

‘‘Sometimes you have to wait for an ambulance, so we need something to use on the person until it arrives. Hopefully we don’t need to use it too often.’’

The IGA was also selected to house the defibrillator because of its longer opening hours.

Tocumwal Chamber of Commerce president Sergio Redegalli said although the defibrillator was good for the community, he said it raises the need for an ambulance service in Tocumwal.

‘‘I’ve spoken to Member for Murray Austin Evans about it and he managed to campaign for an ambulance service in his town.

‘‘Over 70 per cent of our fire service responses are as first responders and not for fires.

‘‘We have the river and aerodrome, so just based on higher recreational hazards that should be grounds for an ambulance station.

‘‘We have the highest population in the Berrigan Shire, and almost double that number during summer when tourists come, it just beggars belief (that we don’t have an ambulance),’’ Mr Redegalli said.
