Skaters to show skills at Southern Riv. event

November 08, 2017

Over 50 children joined Berrigan Shire staff incluidng Mayor Matthew Hannan (seated) at the official opening of the Tocumwal Skate Park.

Skaters across the Southern Riverina have a golden opportunity to show off their skills at the Skate Park Leagues in Tocumwal on Saturday.

In conjunction with the Berrigan Shire, YMCA and Victorian Skateboard association, the competition is part of the Loddon Hume Mallee League.

But the event isn’t limited to skateboards, as scooters and BMX riders can also register for the free competition.

Berrigan Shire Mayor Matt Hannan said it’s wonderful to see this event in the shire.

‘‘We have a lot of young skaters across the shire that no doubt will love this event,’’ Cr Hannan said.

‘‘Council invested heavily into the skate park so it’s good to see that the park is being used.

‘‘If you drive past our skate parks after school times, there are always keen young skaters and scooter riders doing tricks and enjoying themselves.’’

Each participant is required to show off their best tricks for 45 seconds and earn points for the tricks they perform — the more ‘rad’ the trick the higher the points earned.

Each participant will have two 45 second runs.

The winners of each section on Saturday will win prizes from sponsors.

Loddon Hume Mallee League spokesperson Alice Hogan said the day is about participation.

‘‘Not only is this about participation for skaters but a really good way for others to join and try out skateboarding, scooters and BMX,’’ Ms Hogan said.

‘‘You don’t need to be nervous because everyone is trying their best.’’

The events and times are as followed:

● Scooter 11am (14 & Under, 15 & Over)

● BMX 12:30pm (14 & Under, 15 & Over)

● Skate 1:30pm (12 & Under, 14 & Under, Open Male, Open Female)

Spectators are also encouraged to watch.
