Mural tribute to hotel’s former owner

A new landmark in Finley which is creating a great deal of interest for locals as well as visitors to the town is the wonderful mural situated on the side of the Tuppal Hotel building.

This is the ‘brain storm’ of Michelle and Greg Brain who purchased the business some 18 months ago and the handiwork of artist Damien Mitchell from New York, a long time family friend.

The planning has been in hand for the past 12 months and came to fruition last week.

The mural depicts the workings of the historic Tuppal Station including a ram for which the station is famous and irrigation that has enabled the local farming community to be so successful.

Damien’s artistic ability is also demonstrated inside the hotel with a painting of well known local identity Tom Ryan.

Tom, who passed away in recent years, was the brother of former Tuppal Hotel owner Kevin Ryan and was reportedly a hotel groom for more than 35 years.

Damien was able to use a photo of Michelle and Greg’s daughter Carrissa with Tom to create his profile.

There have been many improvements to the Tuppal Hotel since the Brains’ purchase with the major changes coming to a head soon with the installation of a pool table in the newly established games room.

This hotel has enormous historical value in the town of Finley and local historian Peter Hamilton has many interesting news items and photos which will eventually be displayed in the games room.

With Peter’s help, it is expected that some of the history will be included in this column at a later date.

As the warmer weather is finally with us, the Finley Pool committee is seeking help with the annual pool clean up to take place on October 14 and 15 to get the pool up and running for another great season.

Those able to assist are asked to bring along a pair of gloves and, if possible, a pressure washer which would be an enormous help. It is not a hard job but many hands make light work.

The Finley Pool committee has meetings at the Finley RS Club on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm.

Anyone interested in joining the group would be most welcome to attend, including new members.

The committee members are happy to hear the community’s thoughts on what can be done to improve the pool and surrounds.

So keep the weekend of October 14 and 15 free and go along to the pool to lend a hand.
