For the second year in a row the Jerilderie Gold Cup race meet has been affected by the elements.
After being washed out in 2016, the final three races of Saturday’s six-race meeting had to be called off due to strong winds.
Jerilderie Race Club secretary Alecia Williams said safety concerns raised by jockeys prompted an investigation, which led to the cancellation of the three races including the feature $15,000 Jerilderie Gold Cup.
While the Bureau of Meteorology does not record wind speeds for the Jerilderie area, Ms Williams said it felt like they were 100km/h gusts.
‘‘The winds were pretty strong and the horses were struggling to cope,’’ Ms Williams said.
‘‘The jockeys were also complaining of getting topsoil or sand in their eyes.
‘‘We agreed there was an increased risk of something going wrong if we continued.’’
Ms Williams said much like the previous year, trackside action still continued throughout the day.
She said the excitement from the community was on show with the 100 entries received for the Fashions on the Field competition.
‘‘Despite the awful weather we still had a fantastic turnout and the crowd hung around even after the race meeting had to be abandoned to enjoy the great atmosphere,’’ she said.
‘‘The canteen was a hit and had sold out of food by the end of the day.’’
While two consecutive meetings have been affected by weather, Ms Williams said there were no plans to change the date of the popular event.
‘‘We will just hope the weather gods are kinder to us next year,’’ she said.
