Jerilderie’s thirds have earned a spot in the Picola League grand final after overcoming a determined Picola United side by 35 points in Deniliquin on Saturday.
In one of the Demons’ tightest matches for the year, there was no more than six points between the two sides for the first three quarters.
In the last quarter Jerilderie finally started to assert their dominance, more than doubling their three quarter time score and keeping their opponents scoreless.
Brothers Nash and Logan Fitzgerald were outstanding, combining to keep the scoreboard ticking over, while onballers Josh Rochford and Nick Baldwin fought hard to give Jerilderie first use of the ball at all the stoppages.
Lachie Kennett and Sam Owen were solid and reliable driving the ball out of the backline at every opportunity for the Dees.
Final score, Jerilderie 9.13 (67) to Picola Utd 5.2 (32).
The Dees will now face the winner of this weekend’s preliminary final between Picola and the Deni Rovers, to be held in Berrigan on Saturday.
In the first week of finals, Jerilderie’s fourths were knocked out of the competition by Picola United in an elimination final.
The young Demons met the Blues in Yarroweyah and nothing could separate the sides in the first half.
Justin Lawton played his best game of the season, controlling play on the wing, while Zander Nash picked up plenty of possessions in the centre.
In the backline, Rory Knight led by example forcing the ball forward and hitting targets.
Onballers Oliver Knight and Travis Lawton tried hard all day and Austin Mauger battled hard with eyes only for the ball.
Jerilderie’s concentration lapsed in the third quarter allowing the Blues to hold a 10 point lead at the last break.
The last quarter was an arm wrestle and Jerilderie were unable to bridge the difference, ending their 2017 finals campaign.
