Australian Christian Lobby managing director Lyle Shelton will be the guest speaker at the 20th annual Finley Regional Christian Men’s Fellowship dinner event this month.

Mr Shelton, a well-known lobbyist on Christian issues, was awarded the 2016 World Magazine’s ‘Daniel of the Year Award’, an accolade given for extraordinary individuals for their achievements in a variety of areas.

Starting his career working for regional farming newspapers in Queensland as a journalist, Mr Shelton was later appointed as group commodities editor for Melbourne based Rural Press Limited.

After six years in media, Mr Shelton served as a youth pastor at Toowoomba City Church.

In 2000, he was elected to the Toowoomba City Council, and then re-elected in 2004.

After a role as political advisor to Queensland senators Ron Boswell and Barnaby Joyce, Mr Shelton became the Chief of Staff at the Australian Christian Lobby for six years. He was appointed managing director in 2013.

The dinner — to be held on Monday, July 24 — will cover a range of topics, including the controversial issue of marriage equality.

Mr Shelton will chat about the implications of allowing marriage equality in other countries such as Canada and Sweden, and the potential consequences should it be allowed in Australia.

Safe schools, freedom of speech and transgenderism will also be topics of discussion.

Event organiser John Everingham described Mr Shelton as a ‘‘brilliant speaker’’, adding that the dinner will be an opportunity for men to have some of their most pressing questions answered.

This will be the second time Mr Shelton has visited Finley, after attending a seminar in March.

‘‘Australian men love mateship, and this dinner is the perfect chance for men in our region to come together, enjoy a meal and hear from a speaker who discusses topics which are beneficial for everyday living,’’ Mr Everingham said.

‘‘Men should come along to be truly informed about the realities which would follow if we were to change the Marriage Act, as well as other controversial topics in Australia.

‘‘Mr Shelton is easy to listen to, and it will be a very informative evening where men can have their questions answered,’’ he said.

The dinner will be held at the Finley RS Club, at 6.30pm for 7pm seating.

The cost is $30 per person, and bookings are needed by Monday, July 17.
