Berrigan’s NSW Cancer Council branch has been named in the top five fundraisers in the state.
The Berrigan members put on an amazing luncheon every year, which has raised a total of $50,000.
NSW Cancer Council representatives recently travelled from Sydney and Wagga Wagga to interview the ladies and enjoy a cooking demonstration.
‘‘It was amazing ... they came all that way to watch us cook and interview us,’’ luncheon organiser Maria Woodward said.
‘‘We’re such a small town compared to others in the top five.’’
Members of the Berrigan group now feature in a moving promotional video produced the NSW Cancer Council.
‘‘The Berrigan branch (luncheon) started in the CWA rooms and served 40 to 50 meals, but eventually grew out of that location,’’ Mrs Woodward said.
‘‘Now we are serving 150 sit down meals and up to 50 takeaway meals and have been running for 22 years.’’
Mrs Woodward is in her 11th year of organising the event and said she still loves doing it.
‘‘It has been all very exciting.’’
Inara Fox has been involved with the Berrigan group from its beginning.
‘‘I think cancer is something everyone is touched by and my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer,’’ Mrs Fox said.
‘‘We started out with only two organisers and now we’re in the top five highest fundraisers in New South Wales.
‘‘Even if it helps one person we love doing this, we’re all very passionate about it.’’
Organisers almost decided not to run the event this year, due to lack of volunteer help.
‘‘Sadly we’re not getting much interest from younger people, but hopefully we do soon because we’re not getting any younger,’’ Mrs Fox said.
‘‘The people in the town have been amazing, supporting us and we’ll keep soldiering on to keep it going.’’
Please keep Friday, May 26 free for the 2017 Berrigan Cancer Council luncheon at the Memorial Hall.
